The first half of the race saw the group bunched together as no one wanted to take the lead. When the group got too antsy, the line started to spread out and saw a group break off from the main bunch. Stender was seeded 12th going into the competition.
We are very proud of Emily and Ryan - 12th in the nation in their respective events. This is just the beginning for these two youngsters and we are excited to see what they'll accomplish down the road.

Q&A With Freshman, Emily Bryson
Assistant Coach Steve Flanagan caught up with Emily Bryson to discuss her first season at Brandeis University:
SF: Emily, congrats on finishing 31st at the NCAA Championships as a freshman and earning All-American status. How was the weather in Wisconsin?
EB: The weather was really cold, but perfect for a cross country race! It was a little difficult to adjust to considering that it hasn't been too cold here yet, but it never bothered me during the race. There was the possibility of snow, so I was just glad that it didn't snow!
SF: Take us through the race. What was your thought process for each 2k of the 6k race?
EB: I knew I had to get out fast, so I didn't get stuck in the back during the first 1k and 2k. I was able to do that, so going through the 3k and 4k mark I knew I wanted to move into the top 35. I felt really comfortable around then and just tried to stay in the top pack. Moving into the last 1k everyone really started to pick it up and that's when I really started to feel tired. Going into the last 200m I just gave it everything I had left and I ended up passing about 6 people down the homestretch and was excited that I was able to crack the top 35.
SF: Let's rewind on your first season as a collegiate student-athlete. What's the biggest difference you've realized between high school and college - both on and off the course?
EB: Off the course, I would definitely say that the team atmosphere is very different. Everyone on the team is so close and encouraging of one another. IT was incredible to see just how supportive everyone was for me this entire season, especially at nationals. On the course, I'd say that I have learned to be more conservative during the first part of races, rather than going out hard and trying to be right with the leaders like I did in high school. I've also really tried to have a kick the last 400m of all of my races this season.
SF: You had one of the most exciting finishes in the country this year when you outkicked another runner at the UAA Championship, and you earned the USTFCCCA's National Athlete of the Week for it. Do you remember anything about the last quarter-mile of that race, or is it all a blur?
EB: Parts of it are a blur for me, mostly after the race, just because the win was so surreal and I really never thought I had a shot at winning. I do remember coming down the hill, and not really realizing that I could win the race until I saw the leader struggling not that far in front of me. I thought back when I raced at Franklin Park in high school at my All State meet and knew I wanted to redeem myself from that race. Coming down the home stretch I heard the crowd going crazy, and that really helped push me to dig deep and pass the leader.
SF: What drew you to Brandeis during the recruiting process, and what ultimately made you decide this was the school for you?
EB: When I visited the school I loved the feel of the campus, and knew that the team, coaching and program would be a great fit for me, especially considering that I came from a smaller team in high school. I a also interested in majoring in biology and knew that Brandeis had the strong science program that I was looking for in a school.
SF: How has having upperclassmen who have mastered the academic-athletic balance required at college helped you navigate your first semester on campus?
EB: The upperclassmen have been great! Whenever I have questions about classes or I am stressed about anything they have always been there to help me through any problems. It's so comforting to know that I have such great people I can look to for help and who will be amazing role models for me both academically and athletically as I progress through college.
SF: Okay, one last bonus question! Do you have any race-day superstitions or routines that you stick to for every race?
EB: Yes, I always eat the same thing for breaking every morning, cereal and a banana, at the same time before the race, and I always wear the same socks. Right before the race Julia and I also give each other a fist pump, just as our way of saying you got this to each other, which was something we started doing in high school.
SF: We're so glad to have you in stripes, Emily! Congrats on such a great season and your All-American finish in Wisconsin at the NCAA Champs. It's surely only the beginning of something great!
Thank you to Assistant Coach, Steve Flanagan for coming up with questions for Emily Bryson on her arrival back to Brandeis from the NCAA Championship. Congratulations Emily on such a solid start to your career as a student-athlete!

SEPTEMBER RECAP | Roger Williams Invitational & UMASS Dartmouth Invitational
ROGER WILLIAMS INVITATIONAL
For our first competition of the new academic year, we traveled to Rhode Island where Roger Williams University hosted their Invitational at Colt State Park - both the teams took the line for a 5k race. The men won with 40 points in front of Franklin Pierce (43), Wentworth (104), UMASS Dartmouth (112) and Bridgewater State (175). The women were second (40) to Wellesley (29) and followed by Salve Regiona (138), Bridgewater State (160) and Emmanuel (169). It was a great showing on both sides with Ryan Stender (18') and Emily Bryson (19') leading the way, both finishing 3rd place overall. The men's team had a spread of 1:00 from 1st to 7th and the women 1:15. The year looks promising for both squads and we're excited to see what it brings.
Ryan Stender was named the Brandeis University Athletic Department, Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Roger Williams Invitational.
